Penelope Hamilton, counsellor and psychotherapist, founder of Empowerment House
About Penelope

Understanding people has always been at the heart of what I do.

Over the years I’ve worked as a nurse, in recruitment, and now as a psychotherapist and educator. While those careers might seem unrelated, they’ve all been driven by the same curiosity: what shapes us into who we become? That question eventually became the foundation of Empowerment House.

I’ve always been fascinated by people’s stories — the experiences they’ve lived through, the beliefs they’ve formed, the patterns they repeat, and the remarkable capacity we all have to grow when we begin to understand ourselves with greater clarity and compassion. Today, I help people connect those dots — not so I can tell them who they are, but so they can better understand themselves.

Because insight creates change.

My Philosophy

I don’t believe I have the answers to your life. I believe you hold the key to your own.

Life experiences, trauma, stress and self-doubt can make it difficult to see ourselves clearly. They can disconnect us from our inner knowing, leaving us questioning ourselves, repeating familiar patterns or feeling stuck. My role isn’t to tell you who you are or what you should do — it’s to create the conditions where insight can happen, sharing evidence-based knowledge, asking thoughtful questions and offering practical frameworks that help you unlock a deeper understanding of yourself and rediscover the wisdom that has been there all along.

Because lasting change rarely comes from someone else’s advice. It comes from the moment something suddenly makes sense.

It replaces
Shame with curiosity
It replaces
Confusion with clarity
It replaces
Judgement with compassion

The moment you stop asking, “What’s wrong with me?” and start saying, “Now I understand” — that’s where lasting change begins.

How I Work

Grounded in evidence, and in curiosity.

My work is grounded in neuroscience, psychotherapy and trauma-informed practice, but just as importantly, it’s grounded in curiosity. Whether I’m facilitating programs or speaking to organisations, my aim is always the same: to create a safe, supportive space where people can explore without judgement, make sense of their experiences, and leave with practical tools they can keep using long after our time together.

I don’t see people as broken or in need of fixing. I see people as individuals whose lives make sense once we understand the experiences, relationships and nervous system responses that have shaped them.

My hope is that people leave Empowerment House not dependent on me, but more connected to themselves — with greater understanding, self-compassion and the confidence to navigate life with clarity, courage and self-trust.

My journey

I grew up on a sheep and wheat farm near Narromine in regional New South Wales, where I developed a strong appreciation for community, resilience and hard work. My career began in nursing, in hospitals across Sydney, regional NSW and the Kimberley in Western Australia, before I moved overseas.

Over the next seventeen years I lived and worked throughout London, Hong Kong and Myanmar, building careers in healthcare recruitment, executive recruitment and eventually running my own business. Those years gave me the privilege of working with people from many cultures and walks of life, and everywhere, I noticed the same thing: everyone carries a story, and everyone is shaped by experiences that often remain unseen.

After returning home, becoming a mother and navigating my own seasons of change, I felt drawn back to the work that always interested me most.

That journey led me to retrain as a psychotherapist.

Kind words

I have been working with Penelope since January 2024. I have found my sessions with Penelope extremely helpful in providing me with the right skills and tools to assist me when I feel my mental health decline. These skills have helped me develop healthier habits in managing my anxiety and depression. I have learned to see things from a different perspective. Having someone to confide in without judgement and understanding has been very beneficial to me. I feel I can express myself in a safe environment, to be listened to, to feel heard and valued. This has helped me grow confidence, increase my self esteem and overall self awareness. Thank you!

A personal note

Beyond the Therapy Room

When I’m not working, life is wonderfully full.

I’m married and mum to two very active young boys, so a good portion of my spare time is spent as an unpaid taxi driver, racing between football, activities, birthday parties and all the other adventures that come with raising energetic kids. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

When I do find a little time for myself, you’ll usually find me on a yoga mat, curled up with a good book, or quietly slipping away for a weekend retreat. Those weekends are my way of slowing down, taking a breath and filling my own cup, something I’ve learned isn’t a luxury, but a necessity.

Looking back, my life hasn’t followed the path I imagined it would. I’ve changed careers, started over more than once and discovered that some of life’s biggest detours often become its greatest gifts.

Those experiences have shaped not only who I am, but also how I work. They’ve taught me that every person carries a story, that life is rarely as straightforward as it appears from the outside, and that growth often begins with curiosity rather than certainty.

I still don’t pretend to have all the answers. But I do believe in the power of asking thoughtful questions, listening deeply and creating a space where people can better understand themselves.

After all, that’s where meaningful change begins.
